Lake Guntersville is Alabama's largest lake: a 69,100 acre Tennessee River impoundment stretching 75 miles from Nickajack Dam to Guntersville Dam across north Alabama. Its milfoil and hydrilla grass beds made it a perennial stop for national bass tournaments — roughly two-thirds of its anglers are chasing largemouth — but the lake also carries quality bream, crappie, sauger and walleye fishing, and blue catfish over 80 lb have been documented. Free public ramps and private marinas dot the perimeter, with Guntersville State Park a natural base. An Alabama freshwater license is required.
