Sell fishing gear
Four kinds of buyers take used fishing gear: other anglers, tackle shops, pawn shops, and general resale sites, each covered below. Selling angler to angler on GilledIt is free to list, with a small platform fee only when the item sells, and the payment sits in escrow until the buyer receives the gear.
Who buys used fishing gear, and what each pays
Other anglers (marketplaces like GilledIt)
No middleman takes retail margin, so the sale price is yours less the small platform fee. You do the photos and shipping, and escrow protects both sides. Buyers nationwide see your listing, with distance shown for local pickup. GilledIt is new in the US and the buyer base is still growing.
Tackle shops: consignment and trade-in
Fast and zero effort, but shops need their margin, so expect noticeably less than a private sale. Trade-in credit deals often beat their cash offers if you are buying new gear anyway.
Pawn shops
Instant cash and the lowest payout of any option. Only worth it when speed matters more than price.
General resale sites (eBay, Facebook, Craigslist)
Big audiences, but fees on eBay, scam pressure on Facebook (never accept payment by friends-and-family transfer), and no-show meetups on Craigslist. Fine options if you know the pitfalls.
How selling works
From photo to payout
1. List in the app
Open GilledIt, tap Marketplace, then Sell. Photos, title, price, condition grade. Listing is free.
2. Buyer pays into escrow
When a buyer taps Buy, Stripe collects the funds and holds them. You see the paid order in your seller dashboard before you ship anything.
3. Ship tracked or hand over locally
Ship with tracking, or arrange local pickup in the in-app chat. Delivery confirmation releases the funds.
4. Get paid to your bank
Stripe pays out to your bank, less the small platform fee, usually within one to two business days of delivery confirmation.
List your gear free in the GilledIt app
Photos, price, condition, done. Selling happens inside the iOS app. On Android? Join the waitlist and we will let you know the moment selling opens.
Selling used fishing gear: FAQ
Four kinds of buyers take used fishing gear: other anglers through marketplaces like GilledIt, where no middleman takes retail margin; tackle shops running consignment or trade-in programs, which is faster but pays less; pawn shops, which pay the least; and general resale sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist. On GilledIt the buyer can be anywhere in the country, with distance shown in the app for local pickup.
As a rule of thumb, gear in like-new condition sells for around half to sixty percent of its current retail price, good condition around a third to forty-five percent, and fair condition around a quarter. Check completed eBay listings for your exact model to anchor the price. Big-name rods and reels from Shimano, Daiwa, G. Loomis, and St. Croix hold value best.
Listing is free. There is a small platform fee when your item sells, which covers Stripe payment processing, escrow, delivery confirmation, and dispute handling. There are no monthly fees, insertion fees, or relisting fees.
The buyer pays into Stripe-managed escrow when they tap Buy. You ship with tracking, and when delivery is confirmed the funds are released to your bank account, usually within one to two business days. Funds only release on confirmed delivery, so payment and handover never rely on trust alone.
