Lake Okeechobee is Florida's largest lake at roughly 730 square miles — often described as the second-largest freshwater body in the contiguous United States — yet it averages only 9 feet deep: a vast, shallow bowl of eelgrass, bulrush and hydrilla that supports nationally recognized largemouth bass and black crappie fisheries. The most productive bass water lies along the outer marsh edges of the northwest shore, the Rim Canal and the vegetation around Ritta Island at the south end, with public ramps around the Herbert Hoover Dike. Bluegill and redear sunfish round out the panfish action. A Florida freshwater license is required; check FWC's water-level and hazard notes before traveling.
