About Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a 114,500 acre impoundment of the Angelina River in the East Texas piney woods, completed in 1965 and one of the largest reservoirs in Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife rates its largemouth bass fishing as an excellent year-round fishery, and the lake is a nationally known tournament venue, with crappie, white bass and catfish filling out the calendar. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits do the damage in the cooler months, plastic worms and jigs in summer, fished around its hydrilla, creek channels and timbered flats. Public ramps ring the lake and a Texas license is required.
