Chew Valley Lake is Bristol Water's flagship trout fishery south of Bristol, opened in 1956 and famous for the size of its fish: lake records stand at 22lb 7oz for brown trout and 14lb 9oz for rainbows. The season runs from mid March to 30 November, fly fishing only, with 2026 day permits at £30 to £36 from the bank and £62 by boat from Woodford Lodge, whose tackle shop stocks more than 400 fly patterns. Chew is also one of Britain's most celebrated big-pike waters: dedicated pike sessions run in limited late-winter and autumn windows at £79 from the bank or £200 per two-angler boat, and places sell out quickly.
