Loch Awe is Scotland's longest freshwater loch, running 25 miles through Argyll from Ford up to Kilchurn Castle beneath Ben Cruachan — and it produced the British record brown trout, a 31lb 12oz ferox taken by Brian Rutland in 2002. The Loch Awe Improvement Association sells permits online and locally at £10 a day, £20 for three days or £30 a week, with the trout season running 15 March to 6 October; pike can be fished all year (the Kilchurn Castle area needs its own pike permit), coarse species follow the trout season, and under-12s fish free with a permit-holding adult. Wild brown trout come freely to bank and boat tactics, while the loch's famous ferox are hunted by trolling deep water. No rod licence is needed in Scotland — the LAIA permit covers you, and overnight campers need at least the three-day ticket.
