About Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid)

Bala Lake — Llyn Tegid — is the largest natural lake in Wales, over four miles long and a mile across at its widest, lying in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. It is a renowned big-pike and mixed fishery, with perch, brown trout, roach and eels alongside, and it is the only home of the gwyniad, a protected whitefish stranded here since the last Ice Age which must not be fished for. Day permits come from the lake warden or the ticket machine near the warden's office on the Bala foreshore, with Bala & District Angling Association season permits also covering the lake, and an Environment Agency / Natural Resources Wales rod licence is required on top. Confirm access and launching rules with the National Park before travelling.
