Cow Gap Farm Fishery

Cow Gap Farm Fishery is a small mixed coarse pond in the Bradfield countryside on the western edge of Sheffield, close to Dungworth and Stannington. Around 20 pegs sit on a water of roughly six feet at its deepest, shallowing towards a reedy island, and it fishes well on the pole. Stock is genuinely mixed: carp and F1s, crucians, tench, skimmers and roach, plus a sprinkling of small barbel and chub, which makes it a productive pleasure venue for a few hours. Elsecar Reservoir

One of the larger reservoirs in South Yorkshire, controlled by the Elsecar Colliery Society which sells day tickets bankside. Holds bream, carp, perch, pike, roach and tench.

Loxley Fishery

Loxley Fishery is a family-owned coarse pond on Storrs Bridge Lane in the wooded Loxley valley, on the north-west edge of Sheffield towards Bradfield. The well stocked water suits both relaxed pleasure sessions and competitive matches, with common, mirror and F1 carp joined by crucians, bream, chub, barbel, tench and hybrids. Day tickets are collected on the bank by the bailiff and can be paid in cash or by card, with discounts for senior citizens; keep your ticket handy as it may be checked. The Fleets

Fleets Dam is a well established stillwater off Smithies Lane in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, fished on a day ticket and open all year. It is best known for mixed coarse and predator sport: roach, bream and perch feature alongside common, mirror and leather carp into double figures, plus pike for lure and deadbait anglers. Day tickets cost around £6 and are bought from the bailiff on the bank; boilies, livebaiting and night fishing are not allowed, so check the current rules before you travel. Reeds line the margins and trees around much of the water give useful shelter from the wind, with parking, pegs and disabled access on site.

Tin Mill Dam

Tin Mill Dam is a club water at Wortley near Stocksbridge, on the wooded north-west edge of Sheffield, run by Tin Mill Angling Club. There are no day tickets; fishing is by season membership at around £40 for adults and £10 for juniors, which also covers roughly a mile of the River Don. The club operates two ponds here, a Carp Pond and a Silvers Pond, the latter holding roach, bream, crucian carp, tench, perch and chub. Howbrook Reservoir

Howbrook Reservoir is a club-run stillwater off Westwood New Road at High Green, on the northern edge of Sheffield. The reservoir has long been fished for its tench and a head of big bream, and carp of 3lb and upwards have been stocked in recent years, partly to protect them from cormorant predation. Anglers report that a local club, understood to be Chapeltown and District, took over the water, replacing most of the pegs and clearing overgrown banks. Day ticket and membership arrangements change from time to time, so check with the controlling club or a local tackle shop for current permits and rules before travelling.
