Windermere is England's largest natural lake, around 11 miles long and up to 250ft deep, and most of it is free to fish: no permit is needed, just a valid Environment Agency rod licence for anyone 13 or over. It is rated among the finest pike waters in England, producing twenty-pound fish every season, backed by big perch, brown trout, roach, eels and a landlocked population of Arctic char, which carries its own close season (1 October to 30 April). Live baiting is banned under Environment Agency byelaws, and boats can be hired at several points around the lake, though few are set up for anglers. Winter, from October to March, is the prime time for the pike.
