Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles at around 151 square miles, touching five of Northern Ireland's six counties. It sustains Europe's largest wild eel fishery, Lough Neagh Eels carry protected geographical status, and is the only lake still holding a commercially viable stock of pollan, a whitefish found nowhere in the world outside Ireland. The angler's prize is the dollaghan, Lough Neagh's own migratory brown trout: averaging 3-4lb, with fish over 20lb reported, they run the Moyola, Blackwater and other feeder rivers from the first June floods. A DAERA rod licence is required, and most dollaghan fishing happens on the tributaries under local club permits, so sort access before travelling.
