Sea fishing questions

Almost anywhere you can safely reach the water: beaches, piers, breakwaters, harbour walls and rock marks. Public piers are the easiest start because casting is optional and the water is deep at your feet. Use the finder above for mapped waters near you, and ask the local tackle shop which marks are producing.

No licence is needed for sea fishing in the UK when targeting sea species like mackerel, bass or cod from the shore or a boat. The one exception: if you target salmon or sea trout in tidal water you need a migratory licence. Minimum sizes and bass rules still apply, so check current limits before keeping fish.

Summer shore fishing produces mackerel, bass, wrasse, pollack, garfish and flatfish; winter brings cod, whiting and dabs on many coasts. Mackerel from a pier on feathers in July is the classic first sea fish, and a string of them takes minutes when a shoal moves through.

A basic 8 to 9ft spinning rod, a 4000 size reel with 15 to 20lb braid, a packet of feathers or a few metal lures and some ready made rigs cover pier and harbour fishing for under £60. Heavy beachcasters only matter when you need distance from open beaches.

Many UK piers are free to fish; as a 2026 guide, some charge a small day fee of £1 to £5 or require a permit from the kiosk. Rules change by season and by pier, so check the pier operator's notice board or website. Harbour walls are usually free but respect no fishing zones around moorings and lock gates.
