Fly fishing questions
Use the finder above to see mapped waters near you, then browse the 25 fly waters listed on this page. Small stillwater trout fisheries are the easiest entry point: most sell day tickets, many hire tackle, and casting distances are short. Rivers and reservoirs come next once your casting is grooved in.
Less than most people expect. As a 2026 guide, a day ticket on a small stillwater is typically £20 to £35, a rod licence is £7.30 for the day (2026 price), and many fisheries hire a rod and line for £5 to £10. Several also run beginner lessons with tackle included.
Yes. Fly fishing for trout in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence: £36.80 a year for the trout and coarse licence, or £90.40 if you fish for salmon or sea trout. The fishery ticket is separate.
For stocked stillwaters you can cover most days with a handful of patterns: buzzers and diawl bachs for when fish feed subsurface, a damsel nymph or small woolly bugger as a searching fly, and a dry sedge or hopper for risers. Sizes 10 to 14 do the bulk of the work.
Yes. Pike on the fly is a growing UK scene on canals and gravel pits, carp will take dries and nymphs in warm weather, and grayling keep river fly anglers busy all winter. The venue rules decide what is allowed, so check each water's page before targeting other species on the fly.
