Small stillwater trout fisheries are the easiest starting point because most sell day tickets on arrival, while reservoir and river fishing often needs a permit from the controlling club or water company.

Yes. In England and Wales you need an Environment Agency rod licence before you fish for trout in any freshwater: a trout and coarse two rod licence costs £36.80 a year or £7.30 for a day (2026 prices). The fishery ticket is separate and paid to the venue.

As a 2026 guide, small stillwater trout fisheries typically charge £20 to £35 for a day ticket with a two to four fish limit, and £15 to £25 for catch and release.
