Coarse fishing questions

Commercial fisheries with day tickets are the easiest start, club waters offer quieter fishing for an annual book, and canals give almost every UK town free or cheap coarse fishing on the doorstep.

Coarse fishing covers every UK freshwater species except trout, salmon and other game fish: carp, roach, bream, tench, perch, pike, barbel, chub, rudd and friends. Fish are returned alive rather than taken, and it is comfortably the most popular form of fishing in Britain.

Day tickets published in our directory run from £3 to £20, with a median of £10 as of July 2026. Add the rod licence, £36.80 a year or £7.30 a day (2026 prices), and a basic float setup from around £40, and coarse fishing stays one of the cheapest days out going.

Stillwaters and canals: all year round on most venues. Rivers: closed 15 March to 15 June inclusive in England and Wales for the coarse close season. Winter fishing on commercials stays productive, with roach, perch and F1s feeding through the cold.

Maggots catch everything that swims in a coarse water and are the default starting bait. Sweetcorn picks out the better roach, tench and carp, bread works on canals in winter, and pellets rule on commercial pools. A pint of maggots and a tin of corn covers a first session for a few pounds.
