Pike fishing questions
Use the finder above to see mapped waters near you, then browse the 270 pike venues listed on this page. Canals and rivers are free or cheap options with a club book or day ticket, while stillwater fisheries and trout reservoirs with dedicated pike days tend to produce the bigger fish.
On rivers in England and Wales the coarse close season means no pike fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Most stillwaters allow pike fishing all year, but many fisheries protect pike in the warmer months because summer-caught pike recover poorly, so the traditional season runs October to March. Always check the venue rules first.
Yes. Pike count as coarse fish, so you need an Environment Agency rod licence in England and Wales: £36.80 a year for two rods or £7.30 for a day (2026 prices). The venue ticket is separate.
A wire trace is non-negotiable, whatever bait or lure you use, because pike bite through mono and braid. Beyond that: a rod of around 2.75lb to 3lb test curve for deadbaits or a dedicated lure rod, a large landing net, long forceps and an unhooking mat. Many fisheries require a wire trace and unhooking gear before they let you fish for pike at all.
Both catch. Deadbaits like mackerel, smelt and lamprey fished on the bottom pick up the bigger stillwater fish, especially in cold water. Lures cover more water and shine on canals, rivers and clear venues. A common approach is one deadbait rod fished patiently while you search with lures on a second rod where rules allow.
